In 1609, Lope joined the Congregation of Esclavos del Santísimo Sacramento, founded by the Caballero de Gracia. The Oratory, built much later and located on Madrid's Gran Vía, belongs to them. This congregation, of which the poet was named Padre Mayor in 1631, is devoted to opening hospitals and schools, and assisting the poor.
